The breadcrumbs were eaten

In the previous incarnation of opengard.in (in development, formerly imm.victusmedia.com) you could see what your friends (or a lists) main topics discussed were in a moment by typing in the URL /users/twitterusername. Now with the expansion of potential information streams being “the web”, there’s no guarantee or meaning in /users/victusfate being me (unless I claim that identity on our site). We’ve had to rethink the way we handle flowing information, and how best to connect that to a user identity.

While working on semantic processing of user statuses, I spent several cycles thinking about the meaning behind language. When speaking, writing or giving a presentation, we take so much for granted. But if our interpretation tools are to improve functionally, we have to build from the ground up. And that brings us to the title of today’s post, the mysteries of the obvious.

As long as I’m unwilling to face an obstacle, my mind invents clever schemes to prevent me from having to deal with undesirable tasks. That results in me treating the obstacle as a spooky animal. It also means I will miss out on any advantages of understanding the taboo subject.

The idea of elite technomasters is pretty well ingrained into American pop culture. Geeks can be legendary. Although highly overdramatized it’s worth mention of a few of the characters which writers brought to life. But first allow me to clear up how I perceive hacker in this context.

The Source

Through a series of fortunate events, I found myself deep in the bowels of the Museum of Natural History yesterday. I was accompanied by my lovely and lively fiancé Michelle on this journey. One of the highlights of our trip was experiencing the inside of a massive sphere, namely the Hayden Planeterium. We enjoyed a New Years Day celebration in the esteemed style of uber science geeks, watching a Journey to the Stars. Astonishingly, the show wasn’t diminished in any way by Whoopie Goldberg’s narration. Our “space journey” included a groovy time travelling element, enjoyable by audiences of all ages.

Update: Some breaking news that’s fantastic

The Zemanta team (ala @Andraz) has crafted Galaxy, a relational connector between Zemanta and DBpedia + Freebase. This could save me a jump time from entities to connectors! Just heard about it from twitter, here’s the full blog post with all the cool details. Unfortunately there’s no API for such a connection, so we’ll have to do it ourselves anyway. At least I’m aware of the DBpedia and Freebase now.

Not many people know your brand if you’re a startup

I can count on two hands the number of people that know and trust Victus Media. We’re tiny. We’re ghosts. We’re two Jekyll an Hyde founders that are ambitious, and driven to unlock great value from socially shared data. We’re passionate about this space because we see immeasurable value slipping through the cracks. The value is leveraging automated systems to learn more about us as users, in a way we’re comfortable with and in control of.

Product Preview

Amazon product links have an interesting optional functionality called Product Preview. It has had other arcane names in the past (link enhancer), but has a similar functionality to Snapshots. Basically when you mouse over an enhanced link, the browser renders a small image with detailed information.
