The Void of Liquidity Beckons Us To Action
When a relied upon product or service ceases to be a viable long term solution, echoing waves of opportunity flow through the market ecosystem. We are called to action, to do our best to collectively come up with a solution. Alternatively we work in parallel to invent many solutions without the need of mass approval. No single answer need assuade the needs of all users. Fragmentation of user groups by preferences is natural causing the flock of users to disperse into smaller groups. (more…)
Celebrate Blog Commenters
First off I’d like to say thanks to everyone who takes the time to read Victus Spiritus (VS) and leave comments. This thanks extends out beyond the blog itself to comments left in other communities (Hacker News, reddit, twitter, friendfeed, facebook, etc). The act of sharing ideas by blogging is greatly rewarding, more so when others see value in the message. Although I continue to write for myself, the small soapbox I first stood on is no longer entirely my own. It has become a small community, and your voices and perceptions add depth to my simply shared concepts. (more…)
Semantic Web, Can it Happen?
Not if but when
What is the Semantic Web? It’s the Internet in it’s current information pipeline form but with the addition of machine understandable language describing web based objects (pictures, text, audio/video). The term semantic describes the essential meaning of words and in the case of text on the Internet, is usually represented by tags or keywords. The process of representing information with tags is currently being implemented with products made by Zemanta and Open Calais. (more…)
Open Social Media of the People, by the People, for the People
The Cost of Communication is Closing on Zero
Open technology has been developed which enables people to chat or have longer conversations. It’s been around for some time, but only recently have developers understood the many to one communication potential of social media. While we can all benefit from amazing technology that comes out, the rules of engagement and the ownership of socially generated content and attention no longer need to fall under the umbrella of outside corporations. Communities can and will host their own social media servers, fully functioning and formed for their interest. (more…)
The Direction of Victus Spiritus
twitter is on the verge of eating Google for breakfast, here’s why
The web landscape is constantly changing, and with it our navigation tools are advancing. To support the hypothesis it’s important that we first review a brief history of the internet. Initial communication networks were hubs set up with mainframes controlling information and terminals allowing access to that information. Separate localized computer networks developed and finally adopted a common network protocol merging information flow into what is now known as the Internet (From wikipedia) . (more…)
What can actually be accomplished with twitter?
My first instinct, and I’m sure I’m not alone in this, was the childlike king of the mountain rush to get as many followers and popularity as I could. It was only for a moment before I abandoned this path (mostly), before I thought about what I would do even if I could gain an instant of interest from the entire community.
After several hours of using twitter, specifically my web browser and TweetDeck, I’ve been getting a feel for the type of information flow available. It all comes down to the type of people you follow and the tools you use to sift through the data. If you follow intelligent, insightful individuals/companies you are likely to get introduced to some fantastic web content that you may have missed from other paths. The feel of twitter is a mashup of instant messenger (but on a slower time scale) with status updates (Facebook) and a human powered web catalog (much like Digg, Stumble Upon, Reddit, etc). It’s easy to follow suggested links and quickly lose track of time as you continually discover fascinating new perspectives and stories about the world we live in, and fantasies of what it may be.
