Hourly Wages vs Income Streams

Work primarily falls into one of two categories. The majority of work is hourly labor. We perform some work and get paid for the service. Superstar employees can make incredible salaries, but these cases are the exception and not the rule. All hourly labor jobs cease generating income the moment you stop working. It’s pretty evident that this is not a type of work model that is scalable.

The Carrot or the Stick? Daniel Pink Says Neither

As a proto-founder and inspiration blogger Dan’s TED talk caught my interest from a couple of directions. Happiness, enthusiasm, productivity, efficiency, and satisfaction are all concepts that I mull over on any given day. Plus I had this video embedded in a draft at home and it’s 30 degrees so my fingers are going numb from typing on my phone. Enjoy!

This fictional world of optimal business structures

How often do we critically evaluate how effective our business structure is? In corporate America or a large government organization each employee has a large depth of managers that evaluate their performance, and isolates them from customers or end users. This centralized, managerial business structure, which has evolved is a top-down authority driven system. Much of the beauracracy has been put in place to protect the parent organization from legal costs. Although this model has worked for better or worse for the 20th century, it is long outdated. As a society we’re finally realizing* that commoditizing human effort within companies is detrimental to the individual and the organization. The evidence is the tremendous debt, fading dollar value, and rising unemployment rates common throughout the US.

Numerous Advantages of Concepts that Scale

Beyond the decrease in cost associated with mass production, there is measurable advantage to having massive revenue. Even a small increase in efficiency can increase profits by a large margin. Having thousands or millions of customers requires a different approach when minimizing customer dissatisfaction (or maximizing customer satisfaction). Beyond the guessing game of new product offerings, with massive user bases, wide data sets can be collected to understand how and why users prefer your products or services (offering). Localized demand may be low, but global demand could be enormous for our offering. (more…)
