This morning I determined it was a good time to check for a new release and build for chromium. Low and behold my handy ChromiumUpdater from an old TechCrunch post or a zipped dmg failed to function. I went back to the post via a LifeHacker mention but the script was gone. It was time I dig in a little and find out precisely what the application was doing to see where it was going wrong. After all, how hard could remaking a little copy and install script be?

Incompatible Apple Products

I’ll begin by stating I’m a fan of Apple despite my condemnation of deals they’ve made in the past. I changed from a windows user early this year into a big Ubuntu and linux geek. Not long after, I picked up a Macmini, iMac (my wife got hers first), MacBook Air, and three variants of iPhones since 2007 and the rest is history. One particular sore point for Apple products is that they don’t work using standard cable connections (iphone jack), nor do they necessarily work together, and finally networking software between devices is wonky.
Dreamy First Night with MacBook Air

My brand spanking new MacBook Air arrived a day earlier than expected, shipped directly from Shanghai, but no one was home to receive it. I got an email from Apple midday that FedEx would try to deliver the Air for two more days. I chose the quickest option picking it up at the depot last night. Setup this time was incredibly smooth since I went through the effort with an iMac last week. The process took a few hours of automagic synching between my iMac and the Air, mostly due to being over wifi. I don’t own a firewire and World of Warcraft (WoW) is 20gigs or so, XCode is 3Gigs, and my music and other applications took up the remainder.
First Post from Android, a Taste of Freedom
It feels like a lifetime ago when I decided to make my next mobile an Android phone. I picked up a Droid X Thursday and unfortunately I am once again on a platform which I don’t have root access on. It’s only a matter of time before some crafty Android OS folks discover a way to bypass the security. It’s still baffling why I can’t have administrative privileges on my hardware by default. There’s a market opportunity for any hardware and software packages which are capable of providing root by default as well as commoditizing wireless bits.
Fuck you iOS dev team
*update I rewrote the post*
My apologies for the rant without proper explanation. I should disclose since writing this post I’ve converted over our home network to Macs, and I have great respect for the design of the OS/hardware. This subtle change in the notepad app on iOS really caught me off guard.
Choice is Beauty: Why I’m leaving Apple Mobile for Android
*update* I’ve got a pretty solid setup now with a wifi only iphone 4. I couldn’t beat the typing interface for my daily writing. I haven’t found a need to unlock it yet.

Apple & AT&T are Pulling a Thelma & Louise

There they go! But at least they’re happy.
(pardon a little geek rage but I find nothing more frustrating then when company’s make boneheaded business decisions)
A Mock Business Strategy Meeting Between Apple and AT&T
Apple: “Hey we’ve got an ultra dedicated fanbase that does our marketing because they love our technology and products so much.”
AT&T: “We’re a big telecommunications company that has wireless internet.”
Apple: “So what?”
AT&T: “We’ll cut you in for some of the money if you lock us in as the sole provider of wireless Internet access.”
Apple: “We have this App Store concept where we’re the sole provider of approval for software so that philosophy sounds great.”
AT&T: “It’s a win win!”
Users: “WTF! Where do our needs fit in?”

Jeff Says Sorry, But Amazon is Still You’re Admin
Jeff Bezos formally apologized a couple of days ago for pulling stolen data off of customer Kindles. It was a genuine request for forgiveness from a CEO (pretty good stuff Jeff). But that doesn’t change the fact that Amazon is still the administrator of your hardware. The frighteningly fast growing trend is for new technology to be remotely administrated and updated. Why is this frightening? I’ve put together a short list of reasons why losing local administrator rights for an individual or business is bad. (more…)
