This Holiday is for You

If you’re not into cultural and religious celebrations (like me), if you’re far from home, or far from loved ones, here’s one trick to make this time of year more enjoyable. The holidays have existed for hundreds of years not because of mass consumption, or even religious institutions, but because of social gravity that defies physical proximity. It’s great to meet up with friends and family to celebrate life, even if only a couple of times a year, and we find great comfort in sharing each other’s presence.

Take a moment to appreciate precious memories and kind thoughts of those who are impossible to visit, and hold the best parts of who they are close.

It is pretty! (and good point, though why do you dislike holidays)

I enjoy getting together with friends and family but dislike legacy rituals as an excuse to do so. Why can’t we get together simply because we wish to, not because it’s Day X? I guess it helps coordinate free time.
