Using frameworks and librares made by others leverages their hard work, and is a form of flattery and appreciation. Best of all it usually saves me a ton of time.

Always have to ensure that the framework lib is a good fit to your specific needs though (no reason to bloat code unnecessarily)

argh =/
Although when you think of it, ruby did reinvent the wheel, just like jQuery and other frameworks did. They simply made the wheel really effective.
I've always struggled with frameworks, because I feel as a beginner that it's a bit like cheating.
No joke Laurent, at work we're trapped understand dozens of 12-14 year old libraries that I helped manufacture. I find web programming with gems in Ruby on Rails such a pleasure without all the baggage (even though I have much to learn).

modular is the way to go.
At some point, when you have something, you're going to have to think how you will be updating it. Don't get trapped.

Ha, hadn't even imagined that military connection but it's perfectly relevant. Sitting still isn't great for web apps either, they all fade without support.

I could have used your grammar powers while titling it! I'll live with the shame :). Have a great weekend Dave (insanely awesome weather), too bad I have to get my walking done fast so I can get back inside and catch up on startup work.

"Don’t deliberate too long. When tight on time just go with any reasonable option..."

Reminds me of the unofficial motto of the U.S. Army Infantry School: "Do something!-- Even if it's wrong" (<--the thought being if your stuck in an ambush or something, sitting still and not making a decision will get you smoked).

Useless grammar note: should be fewer than 100 ways. Fewer for things you can count (e.g., grains of salt) and less for things you can't (salt).

Good Post Victus. I agree with you on all the points especially # 3 - Shutup and get coding already & #4 (at the end) don't reinvent the wheel is a classic one.

2010 is going to be an exciting year for open / web data that's for sure man. Looking forward to interoperability between social networks in the near future, the amount of linked data out there already will quadriple..

I would like to add that code is 5% of your business, and design is an economic practice (A means to an end). Very few people add value in both areas (design and programming). If you can pick those skills up and do them well you'll be in demand.

Of course there is nothing wrong with being an awesome coder / designer..
